The Cotai Strip is Macau's purpose-built entertainment district, constructed on reclaimed land connecting the islands of Taipa and Coloane. Home to massive integrated resorts — The Venetian, City of Dreams, Galaxy, and Studio City — it is the engine of Macau's gaming and entertainment economy.
Cotai did not exist before 2004 — the name combines "Coloane" and "Taipa." The Venetian Macao opened in 2007 as the world's largest casino, triggering a building boom. The strip was designed to emulate Las Vegas, though several projects were paused during the 2014–2016 gaming downturn before resuming.
