Mount Emei

Overview

Mount Emei is one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rising to 3,099 meters. Its Golden Summit temple, sea of clouds, and diverse ecosystems from subtropical to alpine make it one of Sichuan's most spectacular destinations.

History

Mount Emei has been a Buddhist pilgrimage site since the 1st century AD, when the first temple was built. The mountain was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 for both its natural and cultural significance, with over 30 active temples.

• Tip 1: Stay overnight at a monastery near the summit to catch the famous sunrise above the clouds.
• Tip 2: Watch for the endemic Tibetan macaques — keep food sealed as they are bold.
