Overview
The Mausoleum of Mao Zedong sits at the center of Tiananmen Square, where the embalmed body of Chairman Mao lies in a crystal coffin. It is one of the most visited memorial halls in the world.
Highlights
- Crystal Coffin: Mao's preserved body lies draped in a Chinese Communist Party flag in a dimly lit, climate-controlled chamber.
- Hall of Reverence: The solemn entrance hall features a large seated marble statue of Mao with a painted landscape backdrop.
- Souvenir Hall: The exit leads through a memorial shop selling Mao-related souvenirs, badges, and publications.
History
Built in 1977, one year after Mao's death, the mausoleum was constructed in just six months by volunteer laborers. The decision to preserve and display Mao's body was modeled on Lenin's Mausoleum in Moscow.
