Houhai Lake

Overview

Houhai is the northernmost of the three Shichahai lakes, ringed by weeping willows, traditional courtyard houses, and a lively strip of bars and restaurants. It transforms with the seasons — from summer paddle-boating to winter ice skating.

• Bar Strip: The western shore is lined with bars and restaurants offering lake-view terraces and live music, especially popular on summer evenings.
• Ice Skating: From December to February, the frozen lake becomes a natural ice rink where locals skate, sled, and ride ice bicycles.

History

Houhai was part of the Yuan dynasty's Grand Canal system, serving as a terminus for barges bringing grain to the capital. The lakeside became a prestigious residential district for Qing-era nobles and Republican-era dignitaries.
