Overview
The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) is a 204-meter covered wooden footbridge spanning the Reuss River. Built in 1333, it is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe and Lucerne's most iconic symbol.
Highlights
- Painted Panels: Over 100 triangular paintings from the 17th century — some still bear fire damage from the 1993 blaze.
- Water Tower: The adjacent octagonal stone tower served as prison, treasury, and archive.
- Flower Boxes: In summer, cascading geraniums create one of Switzerland's most photographed scenes.
History
Part of Lucerne's medieval fortification system. The 1993 fire destroyed 78 of the original 158 panels; the bridge was restored within eight months.
