Overview
Tierpark Dählhölzli is Bern's municipal zoo, stretching along the west bank of the Aar south of the Old Town. It combines open-air enclosures for European and local wildlife with a vivarium housing reptiles, amphibians, and fish.
Highlights
- Aar Riverside Walk: The zoo's paths run along the river, blending animal viewing with a scenic nature walk.
- Vivarium: An indoor aquarium and terrarium complex with over 180 species of fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
- European Wildlife: Enclosures for wolves, lynx, wildcats, bison, and other native Swiss and European species.
History
Founded in 1937, the zoo was designed to present animals in naturalistic settings rather than cages. The vivarium was added in 1963 and renovated in 2004. Dählhölzli has consistently focused on European species conservation and environmental education.
