The Matte Quarter sits at the foot of the Old Town cliff, directly on the banks of the Aar river. Once an industrial district of tanners and blacksmiths, it has evolved into a residential neighbourhood with a relaxed, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere and a strong sense of local identity.
The Matte was historically home to trades needing water — tanneries, mills, and dye works lined the riverbank from the Middle Ages onward. By the 20th century the industries had left, and the quarter became a quiet residential enclave. The Matte community is known for 'Mattenenglisch', a cryptic slang once used by the Matte youth.
