The Länggasse Quarter is Bern's university district, stretching west of the Old Town. With the University of Bern and several institutes nearby, it has a youthful, multicultural energy and is home to many of the city's independent restaurants, bookshops, and creative spaces.
The Länggasse developed rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the university expanded. Its grid-like street plan contrasts with the medieval Old Town and reflects the planned urban expansion of the period. The neighbourhood's multicultural character grew alongside the university's international student body.
