Kramgasse is the central artery of Bern's UNESCO-listed Old Town, a cobblestoned street running east from the Zytglogge clock tower, lined with 6 kilometres of covered arcades (Lauben), ornate Renaissance fountains, and cellar shops. It is the living heart of medieval Bern.
Kramgasse has been the commercial spine of Bern since Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen founded the city in 1191. The arcades evolved from medieval wooden market stalls into the stone colonnaded walkways seen today. The fountains were added in the 1540s as part of a city beautification campaign and were carved by Hans Gieng.
