Gurten Funicular

Overview

The Gurtenbahn is a funicular railway that climbs from the Wabern valley station to the Gurten summit in just five minutes, with a vertical rise of 240 metres. It's the gateway to Bern's favourite hilltop playground and an attraction in its own right.

History

The Gurtenbahn opened on 1 October 1899, powered by water ballast. It was electrified in 1946 and modernised again in 1999 with new cars. It carries over 1.5 million passengers per year and remains a vital transport link as well as a tourist attraction.

Visitor Tips

• Tip 1: Use a SwissPass or Bern public transport ticket — the funicular is included.
• Tip 2: The last car down runs at 23:20 on weekdays and 23:50 on Fridays/Saturdays.
• Duration: 10–15 minutes (round trip).
