The Gurten is Bern's local mountain, a broad, grass-covered summit at 858 metres offering panoramic views of the city, the Mittelland, and the Bernese Alps from the Eiger to the Jungfrau. It's easily accessible by funicular and is a year-round playground for families and hikers.
The Gurten funicular has connected the Wabern valley station to the summit since 1899 and was electrified in 1946. The Gurtenfestival began in 1977 as a small local event and has grown into one of Switzerland's most popular summer music festivals. The summit restaurant and observation tower date from the early 20th century.
