Heirisson Island is a small, natural island in the Swan River connected to both shores by the Causeway bridges. Remarkably for a city-centre location, it is home to a mob of western grey kangaroos that roam freely through the riverside bushland.
Named after French midshipman François-Antoine Heirisson who explored the Swan River in 1801, the island has been a traditional meeting place for Noongar people. The kangaroo enclosure was established in the 1940s as an educational wildlife exhibit.
