Fremantle (affectionately 'Freo') is Perth's historic port town, set at the mouth of the Swan River. Its intact Victorian and Edwardian streetscapes, maritime heritage, thriving arts scene, and relaxed bohemian atmosphere make it one of Western Australia's most distinctive suburbs.
Named after Captain Charles Fremantle who claimed the Swan River Colony for Britain in 1829, the town prospered during the gold rush of the 1890s, which funded its grand heritage architecture. It gained worldwide attention as host of the 1987 America's Cup defence.
