The Museo della Carta is a working medieval paper mill turned museum, set in the Valle dei Mulini gorge above Amalfi. It preserves the machinery and techniques of Amalfi's famed handmade paper tradition, dating to the 12th century.
Amalfi was one of the first European centres of papermaking, having learned the craft from Arab traders. At its peak, the Valle dei Mulini had over a dozen mills; this museum occupies one of the last surviving ones.
