Overview
Atrani is a tiny fishing village immediately east of Amalfi, one of Italy's smallest municipalities. Connected to Amalfi by a short tunnel and seaside path, it retains the authentic, unhurried character that Amalfi has largely traded for tourism.
Highlights
- Piazzetta Umberto I: a compact square opening directly onto the beach.
- Church of San Salvatore de' Birecto: where Amalfi's doges were historically crowned.
- Minimal tourism: far fewer visitors despite being 700 metres from central Amalfi.
History
During the Maritime Republic period, Atrani was ceremonially linked to Amalfi. The installation of each new doge took place in its church.
Visitor Tips
- Walk from Amalfi: a 10-minute coastal walk or a shortcut through a pedestrian tunnel.
- Beach swimming: the small beach is less crowded than Marina Grande.
- Duration: 45-60 minutes.
