Arsenale della Repubblica

Overview

The Arsenale della Repubblica is one of the last surviving medieval shipyards in southern Italy, a vaulted stone hall on the Amalfi waterfront where war galleys were once built.

Highlights

• Pointed stone arches: the surviving bays feature dramatic Gothic arches.
• Compass exhibit: displays on Amalfi's claim as birthplace of the maritime compass.
• Regatta banners: drapes from the annual Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare.

History

Built in the 11th century, the Arsenale originally had 22 covered bays. A storm in 1343 destroyed most of the structure; only two bays survive.

• Location: directly on the waterfront, a minute from the harbour.
• Temporary exhibitions: check for rotating art and photography shows.
