The Victorian Quarter centres on MacCurtain Street, Cork's second main thoroughfare, running parallel to the north channel of the River Lee. It is named for its fine Victorian and Edwardian terrace façades and is a hub for independent cinema, theatre, and live music.
MacCurtain Street is named after Tomás MacCurtain, the Lord Mayor of Cork who was assassinated by Crown forces in 1920. The street's Victorian architecture dates from Cork's prosperous trading era in the late 1800s.
