Elizabeth Fort is a 17th-century star-shaped fort sitting on a hilltop just south of the city centre. Restored and reopened to the public in 2017, it offers free admission and excellent views over Cork.
Built in 1601 during the Nine Years' War, the fort was used as a military barracks, a convict depot during the Famine, and a Garda (police) station until 2013. Cork City Council restored it as a public heritage site.
