Overview
Charles Fort is a massive late 17th-century star fort on the eastern shore of Kinsale harbour. It is one of the best-preserved examples of a star-shaped bastion fort in Europe.

History
Built between 1677 and 1682 to defend Kinsale harbour, the fort saw action during the Williamite War in 1690. It remained in military use until the Irish Civil War in 1922, when it was badly damaged by fire. It is now a National Monument.

- Guided tours: Free guided tours are offered in summer — check times at the entrance.
- Walk from Kinsale: The Scilly Walk is a beautiful approach but can be muddy after rain.
