Blackrock Castle Observatory is a 16th-century fortified tower on the banks of the River Lee, 2 km east of the city centre. It has been reimagined as an interactive science centre and observatory run in partnership with University College Cork.
The original castle was built in the 1580s as a harbour watchtower. It burned down twice and was rebuilt in the 1820s in its current form. In 2007 it reopened as a science centre focusing on astronomy and space science.
