Overview
Manchester Town Hall is a grand Victorian Gothic building dominating Albert Square. Designed by Alfred Waterhouse and completed in 1877, it is widely considered one of the finest municipal buildings in the world.
Highlights
- Great Hall: Ford Madox Brown's twelve murals depicting Manchester's history from the Roman era to the Industrial Revolution.
- Clock Tower: The 85-metre tower with a chiming clock that is Manchester's answer to Big Ben.
- Sculpture Hall: A vaulted entrance hall with mosaic floor and cotton-flower ceiling bosses.
History
Waterhouse won the design competition in 1868, beating over 130 entries. The building's triangular plan was a radical solution to the awkward site. A major £330 million restoration programme (Our Town Hall Project) started in 2024.
