Heaton Park is one of the largest municipal parks in Europe, covering 600 acres of rolling parkland, woodland and formal gardens in north Manchester. Its centrepiece is the neoclassical Heaton Hall, surrounded by a lake, animal centre and golf course.
The park was purchased by Manchester Corporation in 1902 from the Earl of Wilton. It hosted the Pope's visit in 1982 and was a venue for the 2002 Commonwealth Games cycling events.
