Central Library

Overview

Manchester Central Library is a magnificent Grade II* listed building on St Peter's Square. Reopened in 2014 after a £50 million renovation, its soaring domed reading room is one of the most photogenic interiors in the city.

Highlights

• Domed Reading Room: A stunning circular space inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, seating 300 readers beneath a coffered dome.
• Archives+: A pioneering heritage centre housing Manchester's local history collections, Greater Manchester archives and the BFI Mediatheque.

History

Designed by E. Vincent Harris and opened in 1934, the library was one of the largest municipal libraries in Europe. The 2010–2014 renovation preserved the heritage exterior while completely modernising the interior.

• Admission: Free; no library card needed to visit.
• Photography: Allowed — the dome is best photographed from the mezzanine level.
