Overview
Castlefield is Manchester's original settlement — a tranquil conservation area where Roman ruins, canal basins and Victorian railway viaducts coexist. The area around the Bridgewater Canal is ideal for a peaceful walk away from the busy city centre.
Highlights
- Roman Fort (Mamucium): Reconstructed walls and gatehouse of the Roman fort that gave Manchester its name.
- Canal Basin: The terminus of the Bridgewater Canal (1761), Britain's first industrial canal, with narrowboats and waterside bars.
- Railway Viaducts: Spectacular brick arches from the world's first passenger railway, now a dramatic backdrop for outdoor events.
History
Castlefield was declared England's first Urban Heritage Park in 1982. The Roman fort dates to 79 AD, and the Bridgewater Canal revolutionised industrial transport in the 18th century.
