Glasgow Cathedral is one of the finest medieval buildings in Scotland and the oldest cathedral on mainland Scotland. Dating from the 12th century, it is one of the few Scottish medieval churches to have survived the Reformation intact. It remains in active use as a Church of Scotland parish Kirk.
The cathedral was consecrated in 1197, though the current structure dates primarily from the 13th century. Legend places its founding on the site where St Mungo built his church in the 6th century. It escaped the iconoclasm of the Reformation thanks to the determined opposition of Glasgow's trade guilds.
