American Museum and Gardens

Overview

The American Museum and Gardens is the only museum of Americana outside the United States. Located at Claverton Manor, a Grade I listed Georgian house overlooking the Limpley Stoke Valley, it recreates complete American domestic interiors from the 17th to 19th centuries and features extensive themed gardens.

History

The museum was founded in 1961 by Dallas Pratt and John Judkyn to foster understanding between Britain and America. They chose Claverton Manor, built in 1820 by Jeffrey Wyatville, as its home. The collection has grown to include folk art, textiles, maps, and more than 15 fully furnished period rooms.

Visitor Tips

• Bus access: The no. 18 bus runs from the city centre; alternatively, a scenic 30-minute walk along the canal.
• Garden events: The gardens host themed events through spring and summer.
• Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
