Zurriola is San Sebastián's surfer beach, a wide stretch of sand east of the Urumea River in the Gros neighbourhood. Unlike the sheltered La Concha, Zurriola faces the open Atlantic and receives consistent swell, making it the go-to spot for surfers and a younger, alternative crowd.
Historically a secondary beach used by fishermen, Zurriola was transformed in the 1990s when the Kursaal was built and the Gros neighbourhood was revitalized. Surf culture took hold in the 2000s, and the area is now one of the city's trendiest districts.
