San Telmo Museoa is the premier museum of Basque society and citizenship, housed in a beautifully restored 16th-century Dominican convent at the foot of Monte Urgull. A striking modern extension by Nieto Sobejano wraps around the historic cloister.
Founded as a Dominican convent in 1531, the building served as military barracks from the 19th century. It became a museum in 1902 and underwent a major expansion completed in 2011, sensitively integrating old and new architecture.
