Parte Vieja (Old Town)

Overview

The Parte Vieja is San Sebastián's historic heart — a dense grid of narrow pedestrian streets wedged between Monte Urgull and the Boulevard. This is the epicentre of pintxos culture, where practically every doorway opens onto a bar counter loaded with skewered delicacies.

Highlights

• Calle Fermín Calbetón: Arguably the best pintxos street in the city.
• Plaza de la Constitución: A colourful arcaded square once used as a bullring.
• Iglesia de San Vicente: The oldest church in the city, dating to the 15th century.

History

The old town was almost entirely destroyed by Anglo-Portuguese troops in 1813 during the Peninsular War. It was rebuilt in a compact grid pattern and has been the social hub of the city ever since. Pintxos culture flourished here from the 1950s onward.

Visitor Tips

• Peak Hours: Pintxos bars are busiest from 13:00–14:30 and 20:00–22:00.
• Etiquette: Order at the bar, keep your toothpicks for the bill count.
• Duration: 2–3 hours for a thorough wander and pintxos crawl.
