The Kursaal is San Sebastián's cultural landmark — two luminous glass cubes designed by Rafael Moneo that sit at the mouth of the Urumea River. It serves as the main venue for the San Sebastián International Film Festival and hosts concerts, theatre, and exhibitions year-round.
The original Gran Kursaal was a belle époque casino built in 1921 and demolished in 1972. Rafael Moneo won the 1990 competition for its replacement, and the new Kursaal opened in 1999 after a decade of debate and construction.
