Overview
The Tren de Sóller is a century-old narrow-gauge railway linking Palma to the mountain town of Sóller, winding through the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana on original wooden carriages. It's one of Mallorca's most beloved heritage experiences.
Highlights
- Vintage Rolling Stock: Original 1912 wooden carriages and brass fittings, operating on 914 mm (3 ft) gauge track.
- Tramuntana Scenery: The 27.3 km route traverses 13 tunnels and crosses several viaducts through orange groves and mountain gorges.
- Port de Sóller Tram: A connecting open-air tram descends from Sóller village to the harbour, completing the scenic loop.
History
The railway opened on 16 April 1912 to connect the isolated Sóller valley — separated from Palma by the Tramuntana range — with the capital. It replaced a gruelling mule-track journey. Electrified in 1929, it has run continuously ever since.
Visitor Tips
- Book early: Trains are popular and limited to 4–5 departures per day.
- Sit on the left: The best mountain and valley views are from the left side heading to Sóller.
- Duration: 3 hours (round trip including Sóller visit).
