Overview

Plaça Major is Palma's central gathering place, a spacious arcaded square surrounded by ochre-yellow Neo-Classical buildings. Street performers, craft stalls, and open-air café terraces make it a lively hub throughout the day.

History

The square was created between 1823 and 1838 on the site of the demolished Inquisition headquarters and a Jesuit convent. Its uniform Neo-Classical design was intended to mirror the great plazas mayores of mainland Spain.

• People-watch from a terrace: The square is best enjoyed with a coffee at dusk.
• Gateway to the old town: Several narrow lanes radiate south toward the cathedral.
