Overview
Passeig des Born is Palma's most distinguished promenade, a wide tree-shaded boulevard linking Plaça de la Reina to Plaça del Rei Joan Carles I. Once the site of jousting tournaments, it's now flanked by upscale shops, cafés, and heritage mansions.
Highlights
- Sphinx Fountain: A 19th-century fountain featuring Egyptian-style sphinxes marks the centre of the avenue.
- Heritage Facades: Several restored noble houses (cases senyorials) with their characteristic enclosed courtyards (patis) line the eastern side.
- Seasonal Events: The boulevard hosts parades, artisan fairs, and the annual Sant Sebastià festival processions.
History
The promenade follows the course of the former Sa Riera torrent, which was diverted outside the city walls after a catastrophic flood in 1403. It became the social epicentre of Palma in the 19th century and retains that role today.
Visitor Tips
- Evening stroll: The boulevard comes alive after sunset with families and street musicians.
- Combine with a pati visit: Several mansions open their courtyards to the public for free.
- Duration: 20–30 minutes.
