Bellver Castle is a rare circular Gothic fortress perched on a wooded hill 3 km west of Palma's centre. Completed in 1311 for King James II of Mallorca, it offers 360-degree panoramic views of the city, bay, and the Serra de Tramuntana mountains.
Designed by architect Pere Salvà, Bellver was built between 1300 and 1311. Originally a royal residence, it later served as a military prison — its most famous inmate was Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, the Enlightenment-era politician, who was held here from 1802 to 1808.
