The Basilica de Sant Francesc is a grand 13th-century Franciscan church centred on one of the finest Gothic cloisters in the Balearic Islands. The church also houses the tomb of Ramon Llull, Mallorca's most celebrated medieval philosopher.
The Franciscan priory was founded in 1281 on the eastern edge of the Moorish quarter. Reconstruction after a lightning strike in 1580 introduced Baroque elements. The adjacent cloister, begun in the 14th century, retains its original Gothic character.
