Pedregalejo is a former fishing village east of the city centre that retains its low-rise Mediterranean character. It is renowned for its beachfront chiringuitos serving some of the freshest seafood in Málaga, particularly espeto de sardinas.
Pedregalejo was an independent fishing village until the mid-20th century when Málaga's urban expansion absorbed it. Many original fishermen's cottages survive, and several families still fish from the shore.
