El Palo is a traditional fishermen's quarter east of Pedregalejo, considered the spiritual home of Málaga's iconic espeto de sardinas tradition. It retains a working-class, authentic Malagueño character.
El Palo has been a fishing settlement for centuries. Its name may derive from a navigation marker (palo) used by sailors. The tradition of grilling sardines on repurposed fishing boats originated here.
