Gibralfaro Castle crowns the hilltop above the Alcazaba and offers the finest panoramic views in Málaga, spanning the bullring, the port, the cathedral, and the coastline stretching towards Africa on clear days.
A Phoenician lighthouse once stood on this hill. The present castle was built by Yusuf I of Granada in the 14th century to protect the Alcazaba below. It withstood a three-month siege by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1487.
