El Caminito del Rey is a spectacular walkway pinned to the sheer walls of the El Chorro gorge, 60 km northwest of Málaga city. Originally built for hydroelectric workers in 1905, it was restored and reopened to the public in 2015 as one of Spain's most thrilling hiking experiences.
Built in 1905 to connect two hydroelectric plants, the path fell into dangerous disrepair after several fatal falls. A €5.5 million restoration project rebuilt the entire 7.7 km route with new boardwalks and safety railings, reopening in 2015.
