The Zubizuri ('White Bridge' in Basque) is a pedestrian bridge designed by Santiago Calatrava, spanning the Nervión River with a dramatic curved deck of translucent glass blocks. Completed in 1997, it has become one of Bilbao's most photographed modern landmarks.
Commissioned as part of the larger Abandoibarra urban renewal project, the bridge connects the Campo de Volantín with the Ensanche district. It was controversial at first — the glass surface became slippery when wet, leading to the addition of a non-slip carpet.
