Designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 1997, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a masterpiece of deconstructivist architecture clad in 33,000 titanium panels. It single-handedly catalyzed Bilbao's transformation from a declining industrial city into a world-class cultural destination — a phenomenon widely known as the "Bilbao Effect."
The museum was commissioned by the Basque Government and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation as part of an urban regeneration strategy for Bilbao. Gehry's design was selected in 1991, and the building opened on 18 October 1997 to international acclaim. It attracted nearly 1.4 million visitors in its first year.
