The Ensanche ('Extension') is the 19th-century planned neighbourhood stretching west from the Casco Viejo, characterised by broad tree-lined boulevards, elegant Belle Époque architecture, and Bilbao's main commercial arteries including the Gran Vía.
Planned from the 1870s as Bilbao's population outgrew the Casco Viejo, the Ensanche was laid out in a rational grid pattern inspired by Barcelona's Eixample. It quickly attracted the wealthy bourgeoisie, whose grand residences still line streets like Alameda de Recalde.
