The Cathedral of Santiago is a 14th-century Gothic church in the heart of the Casco Viejo, dedicated to Saint James the Apostle. It marks a stop on the Northern Way of St James (Camino del Norte) and is Bilbao's oldest and most important place of worship.
Built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries on the site where Bilbao's settlers first worshipped, the cathedral predates the city's official founding charter of 1300. It was elevated to cathedral status in 1950 when the Diocese of Bilbao was established.
