Azkuna Zentroa

Overview

Originally a 1909 wine warehouse, Azkuna Zentroa (formerly Alhóndiga Bilbao) was redesigned by Philippe Starck and reopened in 2010 as a multidisciplinary cultural and leisure centre. Its interior features 43 columns, each with a unique design spanning different civilizations and styles.

History

Designed by architect Ricardo Bastida in 1909, the Alhóndiga served as Bilbao's main wine warehouse until falling into disrepair. Starck's €73-million renovation retained the original brick exterior while completely reimagining the vast interior.

• Entry to the atrium is free — you can admire the columns without buying a ticket.
• The rooftop terrace is open in summer and offers views across Bilbao.
