Overview
Michael's Gate is the only surviving gateway of the medieval city walls and one of the oldest structures in Bratislava. The slender Gothic tower with its distinctive green copper cupola rises 51 metres and houses a small weapons museum with a panoramic terrace at the top.
Highlights
- Only Surviving Gate: Of the four original medieval gates, only Michael's Gate remains standing.
- Observation Terrace: The top of the tower offers 360-degree views over the old town rooftops.
- Zero Kilometre Point: A bronze plaque at the base marks distances to 29 European capitals.
History
Originating in the 14th century, the gate was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1758 when the onion-shaped cupola and the statue of St. Michael were added. The pedestrian passage beneath it connects the old town's main streets.
