Overview
Västra Hamnen (Western Harbour) is a former shipyard district transformed into a showcase of sustainable urban design. Anchored by the Turning Torso, the neighborhood features bold contemporary architecture, seaside boardwalks, and public art.
Highlights
- Architectural variety: Each block was designed by a different architect, creating an open-air gallery of 21st-century design.
- Sundspromenaden: A 4-km waterfront boardwalk perfect for walking or cycling.
- Sustainability: The district was designed to be carbon-neutral, with green roofs, solar panels, and a vacuum waste system.
History
Västra Hamnen was the site of the Kockums shipyard, once Malmö's largest employer. When the yard closed in 1986, the area fell into decline. The Bo01 housing exposition in 2001 catalyzed its rebirth as an eco-district, transforming Malmö's global image.
