Turning Torso

Overview

Turning Torso is a 190-metre neo-futurist residential skyscraper in the Västra Hamnen district, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Completed in 2005, it is Scandinavia's tallest building and has become Malmö's most recognizable landmark.

History

The tower was conceived as part of the Bo01 housing exposition during Malmö's transformation from an industrial shipyard city to a knowledge-based economy. It replaced the iconic Kockums crane that once dominated the skyline. Construction ran from 2001 to 2005.

Visitor Tips

• Tip 1: The exterior is best viewed and photographed from Scaniaparken or Ribersborg Beach.
• Tip 2: Interior tours are rare — book well in advance through the official Turning Torso website.
• Duration: 15–30 minutes for exterior viewing; tours last about 50 minutes.
