Stortorget is Malmö's grand main square, laid out in the 1530s when the city was part of Denmark. Dominated by the Town Hall and an equestrian statue of King Karl X Gustav, it remains the ceremonial heart of the city.
The square dates to 1536, when Malmö was reorganized under Christian III of Denmark. After the Swedish conquest, it became a symbol of the new order. The current Town Hall dates to 1546 but was heavily remodeled in the 19th century.
