Overview
Malmö Opera och Musikteater is the largest opera stage in Scandinavia, housed in a 1944 functionalist building by architects Sigurd Lewerentz, Erik Lallerstedt, and David Helldén. It stages opera, musicals, and ballet year-round.
Highlights
- Stage scale: The main stage is one of Europe's largest, allowing spectacular productions.
- Functionalist architecture: The clean-lined 1944 building is a significant example of Swedish modernism.
- Diverse program: From classic Verdi and Puccini to Broadway musicals and contemporary dance.
History
Malmö Opera opened on 23 September 1944 with a performance of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera. The building replaced an older theater that burned down, and its wartime construction reflects the optimism of Sweden's neutral stance during WWII.
