Overview
Malmö Konsthall is one of the largest exhibition spaces for contemporary art in Europe, with 2,000 m² of uninterrupted gallery space under a distinctive sawtooth glass roof. Admission is always free.
Highlights
- Monumental scale: The vast single-room gallery allows for ambitious, large-scale installations.
- International program: Past exhibitions have featured Ai Weiwei, Yayoi Kusama, and Kara Walker.
- Architecture: Designed by Klas Anshelm and opened in 1975, the building is a prime example of Swedish Brutalism softened by abundant natural light.
History
The konsthall was established as part of Sweden's decentralization of culture during the 1970s. Its generous proportions were revolutionary at the time and influenced other Nordic art institutions.
